Grevillea alpina, "Cat's Claws", common in Victoria and NSW, extremely variable, in shades of red to orange, even yellow or cream. Spreading to prostrate, up to 2m, in dry forest, woodland and heath. Grampians, November, 2001.

Chrysocephalum semipapposum, "Clustered Everlasting", perennial to 1m, flowers about 7mm across. Widespread in most of Victoria. I hadn't seen it before. The centre falls out as they age. Grampians, near Silverband Falls, February, 2003.

Leucopogon virgatus var. virgatus, "Common Beard-heath", common in most southern states, shrub to 50cm. The dappled sunlight fell across this bunch of pretty woollen flowers. Grampians, Heatherlie Quarry area, September, 2002.

Craspedia variabilis, "Common Billy-buttons", erect herb to 45cm, widespread in all states except Tas. and NT. This one came complete with a foraging ant. Hall's Gap, November, 2001.

Thysanotus tuberosus, "Common Fringe-lily", or perhaps T. patersonii "Twining Fringe-lily". Found in all states, flowers 1-2cm wide, underground tubers. Widepread and common across all states, but not in tall forest, or wet or saline soil. Hall's Gap, September, 2002.

Pimelea humilis, "Common Rice-flower", shrub to 30cm, trumpet flowers 12mm long, widespread and common in Victoria, NSW, SA and Tasmania, especially in heathland and drier woodland. Grampians near Heatherlie Quarry, September, 2002.

"Coral Fern", commonly found deep in moist gullies and near streams. Grampians, Glenelg River Road, September, 2002.

Correa reflexa, "Common correa", shrub to 1m, flowers 2-4cm long, widespread in most states, but not WA, in sandy heath through to dry open forest. Flowers occasionally green, and a range of varieties occur. Grampians, Glenelg River Road, September, 2002.

Banksia ornata, "Desert Banksia", shrub to 2m, in deep sand in heathland or mallee scrub, mainly in north-western Victoria, also SA. Grampians, Heatherlie Quarry, September, 2002.

Dillwynia glaberrima, "Smooth Parrot-pea", shrub to 1m, smooth 10mm leaves, 12mm yellow pea-flowers. Widespread in southern Victoria and Qld.,NSW,Tas., not WA or NT. Mainly found in dry sclerophyll forest and lowland heath. Grampians, "Grand Canyon", November, 2001.

Dillwynia sericea, "Showy Parrot-pea", shrub to 1m, flowers 12-15mm wide. Widespread in heathland and heathy woodland, very variable in its features. Grampians, "Grand Canyon", November, 2001.

Epacris impressa, "Common Heath", shrub to 2m, flowers 1 to 2cm, colour ranging from white, to pink, to red, to magenta, but very variable. Victoria's floral emblem. Grampians, September, 2002.

Astroloma conostephioides, "Flame Heath", woody shrub to 1m, flowers to 22mm. Found in western Victoria and SA, in heathland amd mallee scrub. Flowers and fruit a favourite of emus. Grampians, September, 2002.

Styphelia adscendens, "Golden Heath", a prostrate shrub to 30cm, leaves 16mm, stiff and pointed, flowers 20mm long, in heathy regions in southeastern Australian states. Grampians, Heatherlie Quarry area, September, 2002.

Grevillea aquifolium, "Variable Prickly Grevillea", or "Holly Grevillea", a spiky shrub to 3m, in heath, woodland and mallee areas of western Victoria, and in SA. Hall's Gap, "Grand Canyon", November, 2001.
